Helen grew up on the family farm at Scott and attended the country school, St. Lucia. In 1946 she began nursing school in Regina at the Grey Nuns Hospital; graduating in 1949. One of Helen’s many highlights was attending her 70th Nursing Reunion in 2019. Helen’s career took her to many interesting places. She rounded out her career in North Battleford, Saskatchewan as Head Nurse of Maternity from 1972-1983 and completely retiring in 1989.
In 1976, Helen married the love of her life, Leonard Buchanan. This gave her great love and companionship and allowed her to become a beloved mom and grandmother. Together Helen and Leonard shared a good life on the farm South of Battleford. They grew flowers which were shown in many horticultural shows; with many awards. Together they also boarded some horses, enjoyed fishing, entertaining and love of family.
Helen was very involved with the Horticultural Society, Historic Society and Retired Nurses Association. She was a faithful member of St. Vitals Church and CWL.
The families of Helen Buchanan would like to thank Father Sebastian, the CWL Honor Guard and Robert MacKay of Eternal Memories Funeral Service. All were such a comfort during this difficult time. Much appreciation to the special people of BDCC, who became so dear to her in the past three years.
