Fred Douglas Awasis

It is with sadness that the family of Mr. Fred Awasis announce his passing on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at the age of 76 years.

Freddy Douglas Awasis was born to late James & Mary Awasis on Thunderchild Reserve on March 24, 1946.

In his early teens Fred moved to North Battleford Saskatchewan with his Mother and remained a resident until his last days. 

Fred was known as “Disco Doug” he was a well-known DJ who provided music for weddings, graduations, anniversaries, birthdays etc. in North Battleford and surrounding areas. He would get the building dancing and soon enough he would join the party by grabbing his mic and singing along with the music.

He made many friends along the way but in his life he never married.  There was never a “Disco Queen” but he did meet a special Lady named Debbie Kennedy who has since passed on.  He loved her and would refer to her as his “sweety” or “neechimos”. He became part of the Kennedy Family and they loved him dearly.

Soon after his mom passed on, he sold his house and became a resident of River Heights Lodge (nursing home) in North Battleford. He would be seen driving around town on his scooter with his best bro, Alex in tow. Many would stop to say hi and just check up on him once in a while, that was all he wanted from anyone.

Freddy was a very humble man who lived a simple life who didn’t ask for much from anyone which made him live a happy life.

Freddy was predeceased by his parents: James & Mary Awasis; his brothers: James Awasis, Edwin Awasis, Buddy Awasis; sisters: Mary Moosomin, Lydia Lewis; adopted son, Kelvin Meetoos; sweetheart, Debbie Kennedy.

Freddy is survived by many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The Wake will take place at 4:00 p.m. on  Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at Chief James Okanee Memorial Centre, Thunderchild First Nation, SK. The Funeral Service for Mr. Fred Awasis will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 17, 2022, also at Chief James Okanee Memorial Centre. Interment to follow at Thunderchild Cemetery.
